St Catherine's College, perched in the hills above Kilbirnie, Wellington, was founded in 1950 by Sir Marie Claude. It stands on an attractive site, formerly that of a primary school, opened by the Sisters of Mercy in 1918.

For several years it was a Commercial College only, but with the community's needs changing, courses were expanded to the point where, today, it offers the full range of curriculum opportunities found in all modern secondary schools.

School History | Upper Bourke
Until 30 March 1983, St Catherine's College was a private school conducted and staffed by the Sisters of Mercy. From that date however, it was established as an Integrated School under the Private Schools Conditional Integration Act of 1975.

The Board of Trustees was first elected in 1989 and is responsible for the governance of the College.

The College has been extensively remodelled during the last decade, including the construction of a new multi-functional hall, Mercy Hall, a Food Technology Centre, a Music Suite, and a new Design Arts Centre. Redevelopment plans include a new administration area, a chapel, and specialist teaching areas. These will ensure the College's ability to cater for the diverse educational needs of students into the 21st century.
