Wonder Week
Wonder Week is part of the STEM Careers offering for senior students. St Catherine's College Year 11 students and Year 12 Physics class were taken behind the scenes of Wellington Cable Car and Transpower, to see a real-world glimpse of what it’s like to work in STEM. Last term Year 10 students went to the Wind Farm in Makara as part of the Girls in High Viz week.
The aim is for students to understand the incredible opportunities available to them in a STEM career. The best way to do this is by showing them examples of interesting STEM projects and doing activities with them, that will get them thinking about what it means to be a structural or biomedical engineer, a web developer, a geoscientist or any one of the thousands of amazing directions that a STEM career might take you.
Careers Visits
Year 12 and 13 students were visited by 4 female Police Officers on Wednesday as part of a nationwide recruitment drive. As a follow up here is a reminder about the Wahine Toa Female Recruitment Workshop on Saturday 24th August 10-2pm at the Wellington Central Police Station, 41 Victoria St. RSVP to loretta.hunt@police.govt.nz by Wednesday 21st August.
Upcoming trips
On August 20th there are two trips being planned - an opportunity for students thinking about Nursing to attend an Introduction to Nursing at Whitireia and a day at the New Zealand School of Tourism, for students interested in Hospitality and Tourism. If your daughter has brought home a letter, please get the permission slip in asap. On August 23rd, all the Wellington Tertiary Providers have their Open Day for Year 13 students. We will give timetables to the students to let them know what is happening during the day. Caregivers and parents are welcome to explore the many and varied future study options with their daughters around the city. Please email heather.miller@scc.school for more information.
School Courses for 2020
We use schoolpoint (https://scc.schoolpoint.co.nz) for hosting all our course selection processes. The Learning Area pages are open for students and caregivers to see the different courses to choose from. The Course selection link will not open until 2nd September. We want students to carefully think about career pathways and especially using STEM subjects. We are hosting an SCC Careers Expo on 4th September, where we invite many Tertiary Providers to talk to the students. It will be held from noon - 1pm and parents and caregivers are encouraged to attend. Please email mandy.page@scc.school.nz if you have any questions.
