St Catherine's College Newsletter
Dear Parents, Caregivers & Whānau,
Academic Mass was celebrated last week and was a very special Special Character start to our school year. Father James Lyons presided for us and explained different parts of the Mass to us - the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Our new Youth Minister, Teresa Raynor, has been visiting Religious Education classes and at school assembly promoting the Sacramental Programme she is leading. This is an opportunity for students to prepare for Baptism, Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation.
Academic Blacks were presented at the end of the Mass. Academic Blacks are awarded to students who gain Excellence in NCEA Level 1, 2 or 3 or excellence in their Year 9 or Year 10 cohort groups. They are awarded in order to promote academia and to recognise those students who have achieved to the highest level in their academic studies. Academic Blacks in the senior school are awarded to students whose NCEA certificates are endorsed with Excellence. This award consists of a bar on their blazer. 3 Academic Colours earn Full Colours - recognised by a white braid around the blazer. Students in Years 9 and 10 who achieve academic excellence in their Year 9 course or Year 10 course qualify for Academic Blacks.

Achievement was highlighted at assembly this week. Students were congratulated on 2019 NCEA achievement and goals for 2020 were shared, namely that all students engage in all teaching and learning, in assignments, in assessments, and in examinations - with integrity. Achievement will be recognised and celebrated at every assembly and through other mediums across school life.
Student Learning Conversations will be held on the last Wednesday of the term, April 8. More information will be circulated about how to book online for these 20 minute slots when goals and achievement are discussed with your daughter and a teacher. Circle this date and keep it free for this important home - school connection.
Attendance along with effective teaching, has the greatest influence on student engagement and achievement. Your daughter should be in her Whānau by 8.55am every day apart from Wednesday when staff engage in Professional Development and Session 1 starts at 9.10am. If you know that your daughter will be late to school, please contact the College to advise the reason for her late arrival and the time that we can expect her at school. Sleeping in is not a valid reason for late arrival to school. If you wish to take your daughter out of school during the school term, please apply in writing to me well ahead of time.
Relevant contact points for reporting absence or lateness are: (04) 939 8988 Absence Line – press 1; email: reception@scc.school.nz
A Paid Union Meeting has been scheduled for teachers on Wednesday 11 March. School will start that day at 10am.
