9th April- School Newsletter

Kia ora whānau of St Catherine’s College,

Greetings as we enter the third week of Lockdown and importantly for us all, Easter weekend.

Easter is the Church’s season of great hope. The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ has, for over 2000 years, been the touchstone for our Catholic faith. We are people of great hope - that the death and resurrection of Jesus means salvation for us in this earthly life and in the promise of eternal life. In this time of isolation and lockdown, we pray in great hope for a return to the love and companionship of family, friends and colleagues.

Easter Liturgies: Cardinal John in his weekly newsletter has highlighted the following opportunities for liturgies which will be celebrated from the Chapel in Viard House and will be available online for anyone to follow and participate in -

  • Holy Thursday at 7.30pm

  • Good Friday at 3pm

  • Easter Vigil (Saturday) at 7.30pm

These can be accessed via YouTube -

Students of St Catherine’s have been wonderful allies for each other and staff over the past 2 weeks. Their initiatives and generosity are a wonderful testament to their faith, spirit, and the camaraderie they share with each other and with their school.

Staff are fully engaged in the preparation and delivery of online learning from Monday 20 April. Their commitment and creativity are huge assets to St Catherine’s College.

I wish all families a very happy and holy Easter full of hope and peace for our future.

O Lord, look upon your family, for whom

our Lord Jesus Christ did not hesitate to

be delivered to death. May His

resurrection give us perseverance and

lead us to salvation. We ask this

through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Ma Te Atua koutou e manaaki e tiaki

(May God bless and care for you all)

The Board of Trustees held its first virtual board meeting last night. Steve gave us an update on all the great work he and all of the St Catherine’s staff have been doing to support our students and to plan for the coming term. It was also great to hear of the student-led initiatives such as the virtual kahoots, liturgies, quizzes and even community breakfast. We may be isolated but the connections are still strong.

As a board, our focus is on ensuring that Steve and his team have all the resources and support they need at this time. And it is clear to us that the school is in a good place to face this new learning world, and that processes are being put in place to ensure that all of our students are able to continue to have their learning needs met and to receive any other necessary support.

I’m sure that many in our community will be feeling a bit disoriented this week facing an Easter without the ability to join with your communities in person for the Holy Week Ceremonies. So please take care and I wish you all a safe and peaceful Easter weekend.
