Kia ora whānau of St Catherine’s College,

The strident siren sound emitting from my phone last night confirmed we were back into a pattern of behaviour to keep ourselves and our communities safe. Alert Level 2 is with us until Wednesday midnight and, in the spirit of ‘an abundance of caution’, we have revised this week’s calendar.

Athletics Day scheduled for tomorrow at Newtown Park has been cancelled. This is a tough call to make but, with bad weather forecast and now with criteria encouraging such gatherings not to proceed, we have made the call that Tuesday 16 February will be a normal school day. All students are therefore expected in their Whānau by 8.55am.

We are holding an Ash Wednesday liturgy in our Hall on Wednesday 17 February. Unfortunately, we have to reverse the invitation for whānau and friends of the college to join us. The liturgy will only be for staff and students.

On Friday 19 February at 5.30pm we are hosting ‘FAITH, Food, Whānau’ - a meet-the-teachers BBQ for our Year 9 families and whānau. At this stage this event is still on; we will confirm this on Thursday morning after the Prime Minister’s Alert Level review.

It is important that Health and Safety measures are adhered to every day - please take a proactive approach to keeping Covid out of our community -

  • Use the Covid Tracer App when you arrive at school and wherever you go

  • Keep a 1m physical distance from others where possible

  • Stay home if you feel unwell

  • Wash your hands well and sneeze /cough into your elbow

  • Sanitise frequently

  • Wear masks on public transport

To close, I am quoting a whakataukī shared with us by our PD facilitator, Kath Delahunty, this afternoon. It seems very appropriate as we navigate these times together,

Ki te kotahi te kākaho,

Ka whati;

Ki te kāpuia,

E kore e whati

If a reed stands alone, it can be broken, if it is in a group, it cannot.

When we stand alone we are vulnerable, but together we are unbreakable

Ngā mihi nui

Steve
